Where is Tent City in Dallas? ›

Among the largest homeless encampments are the “tent cities” which existed over the last decade, in various parts of Dallas: under I-45 near downtown[2], I-45 at I-30 approximately one mile south of downtown[3], and on a plot of land near Malcolm X Blvd.

Farmers Branch-based Centurion American Development Group has acquired the 241-acre Southfork Ranch, it announced in a news release. One of the largest residential developers in North Texas, Centurion now plans to give the site's famous ranch house some neighbors.

As a result, Tent City was officially closed down in 2017, and inmates were relocated to other facilities within the Maricopa County jail system. Today, the site no longer functions as a detention center.

The tent city in Tornillo, Texas was created in order to "house the overflow of immigrant children, many of whom have been separated from their parents," according to NBC News. It was run by the Administration for Children and Families which is a division of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

From Ewing Mansion to Southfork Ranch

As the demands increased, the family found it difficult to continue living in what was quickly becoming the leading tourist destination in the Dallas metropolitan area. In 1985, the family moved away, and Southfork Ranch became solely a tourist and filming property.
